It is still too early to tell.
The social rebellion is already obvious, but the spiritual side has yet to transpire.
For all their differences, the Arab spring, the “indignatos”, and “Occupy” show the impatience of the majority, young in particular, with corruption at the top and the preposterously unequal distribution of wealth and incomes.
Their own lack of prospects fuels young people’s anger. But is their anxiety deeper?
Has it also got to do with the realisation that economic growth and consumerism are illusions that cannot be sustained for very much longer? That these illusions are based on a flawed vision of the world, and total disconnect with the subtle side of existence?
Do they perceive that corrupt elites lining their pockets with frantic urgency are just dinosaurs trying to survive, who do not deserve our envy?
Probably a number of protesters sense all this pretty well. But they probably are a tiny minority as yet. No surprise there: being born and bred on junk food, manipulative television and trash materialism is hardly the most fertile ground for lucidity.
The movement will undoubtedly lead to mistakes and disappointments, like revolutions of the past. But, contrary to what cynics would have us believe, humanity is not condemned for ever to in-fighting, competition, meanness, and fear.
In the mysterious grand scheme of things, the most reasonable assumption is that humanity, part of universal consciousness, is in a process of evolving towards harmony.
Mankind’s negative thoughts and deeds are turbulences on the edges of a river; let us not confuse them with the main current.
Fear not, stroke your cat, and keep your eyes and thoughts open.
Love,
Leo
